Two Dublin college students, Frances and Bobbi, and the strange and unexpected connection they forge with married couple, Melissa and Nick.

Based on Rooney's first novel (Rooney was her second), "Conversations With Friends" takes us back to the Trinity College Dublin campus, and this time we are exhausted by the ever-present Princess Francis (Alison Oliver, a Lear Academy graduate just like "normal" people" Paul Mescal). An aspiring writer from a poor family - her parents are divorced, her father is a low-functioning alcoholic - she's the kind of person who prefers to keep the world away rather than risk getting hurt when dealing with it.Her best friend is Bobby (Sasha Lane), a daring and opinionated American who has so far been with Frances. Three years ago; they broke things off amicably, but the specter of their relationship lingers, charred in every interaction between them and their common spoken word that they perform around Dublin.

But things escalate for both of them when they are approached by Melissa (Jimma Kirke) on one of their shows, an older writer who finds herself drawn to them. She's famous, stable, and married to Nick (Joe Alwyn), a dashing but energetic actor. Frances is immediately drawn to the latter, and before she says "we saw you through the bar and we liked your taste," Frances and Nick engage in an illicit affair that threatens to open Francis' heart and irreversibly damage their relationships with both Melissa and Bobby.
